Best Things To Do In Brewster, MA
1. See The Brewster Flats
One of the things Brewster is famous for is the incredible Brewster Flats, and this is something I suggest that everyone sees during their visit to Cape Cod! While Brewster is the tidal pools’ namesake, the flats actually extend all the way up to Eastham, but this is a great place to experience them.
Okay, so let’s back track for a bit – what exactly are the Brewster Flats, you maybe wondering? Well, they’re the largest tidal pools in North America! At the lowest tide during the day, you can walk out onto the ocean floor for over a mile, which gives you an amazing “end of the world” feeling. It’s also a really fun way to spot wildlife on the ocean floor.
At certain points throughout the year, low tide will sync with sunset, but more on that later in the post 😉
2. Have A Beautiful Beach Day
As mentioned in the intro, Brewster has beautiful beaches along Cape Cod Bay, and this body of water is perfect for warm and calm water, making these a great choice for kids and those who don’t like wavy surf. There are also some beaches on fresh water ponds for a very serene and unique day at the waterfront.
Some great beaches to check out in Brewster are:
- Breakwater Beach
- Ellis Landing Beach
- Crosby Landing Beach
- Paine’s Creek Beach
- Linnell Landing Beach
Pro Tip 1: You’ll want to be aware of the tide schedule when you visit Brewster beaches, as it changes dramatically.
Pro Tip 2: Parking at Brewster beaches is by permit only from mid-June through Labor Day, and is open to both town residents and visitors. To park at Brewster beaches during this time, you must get a permit. Visitors can purchase permits by the day, or by the week.
3. Catch A Gorgeous Beach Sunset
Some of the best beaches for sunset on Cape Cod are right here in Brewster! So catching an epic beach sunset is one thing that should be on everyone’s list.
One of the coolest sunset experiences to have in the area is a low tide sunset, and there are certain times throughout the year (usually in the summer around mid-July), when you can walk far out onto the ocean floor during sunset. I’ve done it a few times, and have always loved it. During your visit, check the tide schedule to see if you’ll get lucky enough to have this experience!
Even if sunset is at high tide, it’s still absolutely worth sticking around for the show.
Pro Tip: Brewster beaches stop monitoring for beach permits after 4pm, so you can easily park here for sunsets without having a parking permit.
4. Visit The Brewster General Store
One of the best general stores in all of Massachusetts is the Brewster General Store, and this is a stop you won’t want to miss while exploring the area.
Since 1866, this cute little shop has been a staple on Cape Cod, and they sell everything from coffees and the morning paper, to oil lamps, apparel, candy, kid’s toys, groceries, housewares and so much more. Part of the fun during your visit is never really knowing what you may find!
And the staff here are always so friendly and welcoming. This is one of my favorite places to visit when I come to the Cape.
5. Get Ice Cream At Brewster Scoop
Right next to the Brewster General Store is Brewster Scoop, the best place to get ice cream in town! It’s easy to drive passed this cute little shed, but be sure to keep your eyes peeled and swing by for a tasty treat. Better yet, combine it with your trip to the general store 😉
Serving premium ice creams, sundaes, frappes, and floats, including over 30 flavors to choose from, this is such a fun place to visit in Brewster.
6. Shop At Lemon Tree Village
One of my favorite things about Brewster is the amazing art scene. There are galleries sprinkled all over town, and there are also some wonderful shops that highlight creative, local artists and unique hand-crafted items. One of the coolest places to shop in town is at the Lemon Tree Village.
This little outdoor shopping plaza is home to some really cute shops, including another ice cream place, a pottery boutique, a bird house shop, a chocolate store, and more. It’s most definitely worth swinging by, especially since it’s right off Route 6A.
Pro Tip: There are also public bathrooms here!
7. Explore The Cape Cod Museum Of Natural History
One of the best things to do in Brewster, MA is the wonderful Cape is the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, which is right off Route 6A. I absolutely love this place for two reasons.
The first, it’s an incredible museum, especially for kids. While it’s very small, it does a great job showcasing interesting things about the local ecosystem, and has an aquarium that changes frequently to showcase local wildlife.
Secondly, the museum has an amazing nature trail right in its backyard. But since it’s so amazing, I decided to give this its own section below 🙂
8. Enjoy The Nature Trails
Okay, so guys, Brewster has some pretty awesome nature trails, and as mentioned above, the Natural History Museum is home to my favorite in town – the John Wing Trail. You don’t even have to visit the museum to hike the trail, either, and it’s open and free to the public.
This trail is a 2-mile loop, that begins by crossing a beautiful boardwalk over the salt marshes, and ends at a secluded beach along Cape Cod Bay that offers sweeping coastal views. This is another area where low tide is especially fun for exploring wildlife.
When walking this trail, it’s important to check the tide schedule before heading out, as the boardwalk can be covered by water at high tide.
Parking For The John Wing Trail: If you don’t visit the museum and want to hike the John Wing Trail, be sure to park down the road at Drummer Boy Park. It’s only a 5-10 minute walk to the trailhead from here, and this allows parking spaces to remain open for those visiting the museum.
Brewster has other nature walks that are wonderful to do, including:
- Lee Baldwin Trail
- Sheep Ponds Woodland Trail
- Eddy Bay Trail
9. Spend The Day At Nickerson State Park
Nickerson State Park is a great place for an afternoon excursion, and is one of the top attractions in the lower Cape region.
Spanning 1,900 acres, the park is home to woodland trails, ponds and picnic areas, there’s plenty to do here for a full day out in nature. The calm pond water is perfect for a day of swimming with younger kids, and there are over 10 miles of walking and bike trails to explore.
Pro Tip: The fee to enter the park for Massachusetts Residents is very affordable. However, for out-of-state visitors, it’s $30 per car.*
*Prices as of 2023.
10. Visit The Stony Brook Grist Mill & Museum
For history buffs, or really, anyone who just enjoys idyllic scenery, the Stony Brook Grist Mill & Museum is one of the best things to do in Brewster, MA.
The grounds are open to the public, so if you don’t want to visit the museum, you can stop by at any time, and walk over to the mill. The museum is open on Saturdays in the summer, and offers demonstrations of the mill. You can even purchase freshly-ground corn meal here for a unique souvenir!
The museum itself is on the top floor, and it’s also a cool experience. It’s small, but does a great job showcasing what life was like on Cape Cod in the 19th century, and you’ll also like to see weaving demonstrations during your visit.
While here, be sure to allow time to walk around the grounds – they’re really quite beautiful and serene!
11. Hop On The Cape Cod Rail Trail
One of the top things to do in all of Cape Cod is the amazing Cape Cod Rail Trail, which connects Dennis, all the way up to Wellfleet. And there are plenty of opportunities to hop onto the trail in Brewster! In fact, the trail runs along Nickerson State Park, which is one of the best stops to make on the path.
In fact, most people agree that Brewster is one of the most scenic parts of the trail.
If you’re starting in Brewster, you can really go in either direction: west toward Dennis, or east toward Wellfleet – the choice is yours based on personal preference. The best place to park for the rail trail in Brewster is at 500 Long Pond Road.
If you’re in need of bike rentals, Brewster Cycle Center is a great place to check out, and they’re right on the rail trail.
Bonus: E-Bike The Trail!
If you’ve ever wanted to try e-bikes, you can also check out On The Trail E-Bikes! This cute little rental place is next door to the Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters, and they’ll get you all set-up with your e-bike rental for a day of fun on the trail.
12. Visit Drummer Boy Park & The Windmill
Earlier in the post I mentioned Drummer Boy Park, which is where you should, well … park if you’re planning to walk the John Wing Trail and not visit the museum. But, the park is worth a visit, even if it’s a quick one, while in Brewster!
The park is home to a beautiful windmill, picnic tables, short walking paths, and lots of events and fairs throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Whether you’re just looking for a peaceful place for a picnic, or want to see the windmill, it’s an easy visit right of Route 6A.
13. See A Show At Cape Rep Theater
Looking for something fun to do at night? Then I highly suggest you look into getting some tickets for a show at the Cape Rep Theater, which showcases all the amazing local talent in the area.
If you’re visiting in the summer months, chances are performances will be held in their beautiful outdoor theater, which is perfect on a warm summer night. There’s also an indoor theater, and special programs for children.
Click here for more information on shows running during your visit!
14. Browse The Art Galleries
Mentioned earlier in the post, one of my favorite things to do in Brewster, MA is enjoy the local art scene. It’s hard to not find galleries all over town, and you’ll enjoy all kinds of work showcasing different mediums, from painting to photography.
One of the best galleries to check out is the Sydenstricker Glass Gallery & Workshop. Even if glass art isn’t your thing, it’s inspiring to visit just to appreciate the creativity that goes into each piece. During your visit here, you’re likely to see the artists at work, creating the designs, and bringing the pieces to life.
15. Visit Great Cape Herbs
Also next to Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters is Great Cape Herbs, which is such a cool place to stop when in town. Part organic farm, and part herbal apothecary, Great Cape Herbs is the place to go when you’re looking for natural and homeopathic health care remedies.
Making their own creams, salves, bug sprays, essential oils, and supplements, the shop was founded by herbalist Stephan Brown, and they do all their business via word-of-mouth. They even provide consultations to acupuncturists and nutritional consultants, so they really know their stuff.
But the best part is, they also share their incredible knowledge with its customers. Pop in to talk to someone about your concerns, and you’ll get personalized recommendations on the best of their products to use. It’s such a wonderful experience shopping here!
16. Experience Brewster In Bloom In The Spring
If you happen to visit in the springtime when all the daffodils are in bloom, you’ll want to have the Brewster in Bloom festival on your radar – it’s one of the most cheerful events in spring in Massachusetts!
Typically taking place at Drummer Boy Park the first weekend in May, this arts and crafts festival is the best way to celebrate the arrival of spring – you know, once all the snow is actually gone, which seems to take forever in New England!
This 3-day event is not just an arts and crafts show, though. There’s also a parade, the bloom run, concerts, and special events at the local businesses in honor of the event.
17. Celebrate During Brewster For The Holidays
Most towns on Cape Cod have a festival for the holiday season, and Brewster is no exception! The Brewster For The Holidays festival is a 3-day event with all the best holiday celebrations you could hope for.
During the event, you’ll get to experience the tree lighting (and a very cool windmill lighting at Drummer Boy Park!), concerts, pictures with Santa, and lots more. Each year, the celebration is also commemorated with a special ornament design that has a limited release, which is such a perfect collectible item to remember your trip by.
Fun Cafés & Restaurants In Brewster
While there are so many fun things to do in Brewster, MA, one of the best things to check out in town are the wonderful cafés and eateries. So, I created a special section of my favorite places to visit when I’m in town.
18. Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters
I mentioned Snowy Owl earlier in the post, but I wanted to highlight this great little coffee shop in its own section. This is truly one of the best places to get a cup of coffee on Cape Cod. In fact, it got so popular, they opened up locations in Sandwich and Chatham. But the Brewster shop is a treat to visit.
Snowy Owl sources their beans from farmers that prioritize environmental sustainability and economic development, and they roast the beans themselves to create their own special blends. The entire process from bean to cup creates an incredible coffee moment to enjoy, and Snowy Owl strives to make the process approachable, not intimidating.
Have a question about their blends? Don’t be shy! Everyone that works here is friendly, and enjoys sharing their knowledge with you, so that you can feel confident in picking the perfect roast to try.
19. Eat Cake 4 Breakfast Bakery
Oh man, so you guys, the blueberry danish from Eat Cake 4 Breakfast in Brewster is my latest obsession, and this is a place you really need to visit when in town! And while the blueberry danish is definitely a stand out, everything I’ve ever gotten from here has been awesome.
This bakery serves up everything from cookies and croissants, to scones and pies, and you’ll be hard-pressed to narrow down your order to just a few things. If you love artisanal baked goods, this is a must-visit.
20. Spinnaker Restaurant
One of the best restaurants on Cape Cod, and definitely one of the best in Brewster, is Spinnaker Restaurant. With a focus on fresh and local seafood, and quality ingredients, it’ll be hard to walk away from your meal disappointed. Dishes here are Mediterranean-inspired, and simple in the very best way possible.
With your appetizer course, I recommend ordering one of their spritz cocktails, which will have you feeling transported to Italy in no time!
Pro Tip: Spinnaker is a popular place in the summer, and reservations are required. For Friday and Saturday nights, they recommend booking 1 month in advance.
21. Fare And Just Kitchen
My husband is actually vegetarian, so we’re always on the lookout for vegetarian-friendly places to eat around Cape Cod, especially because everything is very seafood-focused (which I personally love 😉). Fare And Just Kitchen is an awesome place to check out if you’re looking for vegetarian/vegan cuisine!
With a focus on burgers, bowls and smoothies, they also have other menu items available that change with the seasons. And everything here is delicious!
Pro Tip: Their hours are more limited than other places on the Cape, so it’s best to call before visiting to make sure they’re open. But for great vegetarian-friendly food, it’s more than worth the effort.

Does Brewster Have A Downtown?
Not really. Commerce around Brewster is more spread out, and not exactly walkable, either. You won’t find a designated Main Street area with lots of shopping and dining. While most places are found along Route 6A, which runs through town, it’s all pretty spread out, and you’ll want to drive to most destinations.
