Fun Salem, MA October Outfit Ideas You Can Easily Recreate

If you’re heading to Salem, Massachusetts this October, and not sure what to expect in terms of how people dress, or what you should actually wear, you’ve come to the right place. Having been to Salem in October many times over the years, I’ve put together this post to share how most people dress, and varied outfit ideas – everything from witchy-inspired, to classic and comfortable.

And the best part? These outfits will be easy to recreate with a little bit of planning. I update this post a few months before October each season to include up-to-date links to in-stock items to help you shop, but you can also use these ideas for inspiration if you already own similar things, too.

And with that, let’s get started!

to what I’m wearing in photos.

What Do Most People Wear In Salem, MA In October?

Honestly, you’ll find pretty much everything in Salem during the month of October. It’s such a wonderfully creative destination this time of the year where people are free and welcomed to dress for the occasion. So, you’ll see witch’s hats, full-on costumes, face make-up, and everything else in between.

That said, you’ll also find people in regular clothes, too. There really isn’t any expectation for you to dress up, but if you want to, you’ll fit right in. Hopefully that helps you to decide!

How To Dress For Salem, MA October Weather

In terms of weather, it can vary a lot, especially between early October and late October. And I always tell people to check the forecast a few days before you leave to get the most accurate temperature and weather predictions, and then pack accordingly.

That said, Salem’s October weather is likely what you think it is: cool mornings and evenings, and mild afternoons. Early October tends to bring warmer temperatures, whereas late October, as it gets closer to Halloween, tends to be a bit cooler.

Sometimes, the days can be sunny and warm, and others, cold and rainy. It really just depends, and that’s the kind of weather New England is known for in the fall season.

Salem, MA October Outfit Ideas

All these outfit ideas are more in the “traditional” category, with a few of them taking a fun and classic spin on the “witchy vibe,” if you wanted to dress up a bit. My own personal style tends to be classic New England, so these are all within my own wheelhouse, so to speak. However, I think most folks will get some fun outfit ideas based on these suggestions 😊

Salem October Outfit Idea 1: All Black & Witchy

Me standing in front of a red house, dressed in black jeans, a black sparkly sweater, and witch's hat.

This is probably about as costume-y as I’ve ever dressed in Salem in the fall season, but it’s also an easy way to participate in the Halloween spirit without making a full commitment.

I just threw on some black jeans, and a black sparkly sweater I had (but even a regular black sweater is perfect), and then paired it with some black Chelsea boots. My purse that day was actually a pretty burgundy one, for a pop of color, which was nice.

If you wanted to lean into the witchy vibe more, you could also carry around a broom.

Salem October Outfit Idea 2: All Black & A Statement Fall Coat

Me standing in front of a red house, wearing black jeans, a black sweater, black boots, and a rust-colored gingham wool coat. I also wore an orange velvet headband in my hair for the perfect Salem in October outfit accessory.

When it doubt, you could just wear all black, and nix the witch’s hat. This still leans into the Halloween vibes without any costume commitment, and allows you to dress more for fall, and less for the holiday.

For this option, I wore my black jeans and black sparkly sweater, and paired it with a rust gingham coat I’ve had for a few years now. I bought it for a trip to Scotland, and now, it’s one of my favorite pieces I own for the fall season. It works perfectly for a trip to Salem in the fall!

October Outfit 3: Casual With A Salem Witch House T-Shirt

Me standing in front of an old black house in Salem, wearing black jeans, a gray t-shirt with the Witch House printed on it, an orange cardigan sweater, and a burgundy baseball hat. This is one of my favorite October outfits to wear in Salem in the fall season.

This is a pretty simple and casual outfit idea that can honestly be worn year-round. I’ve got on black jeans, black Chelsea boots, a rust-colored cardigan, and one of my favorite t-shirts from District Trading Co., which they made locally in Salem. It’s printed with the Witch House on it, which is so perfect to wear during your visit in Salem.

District Trading does online ordering, so you can order it before you arrive (if you don’t want to risk them selling out of your size, which is possible). Or, if you’re visiting earlier in October, you can visit their shop on Essex Street, and buy it there as a fun souvenir (and to wear around, of course).

For accessories, you could go with a baseball hat like I did above, or throw on a headband. Heck, even a witch’s hat would work here, too 😉

Salem Outfit Idea 4: Fall Vibes

Me standing in front of a red house in Salem, wearing black jeans, a burgundy sweater, and oversized plaid fall scarf.

If you’re looking to go with more traditional fall vibes for your trip to Salem, I get it, and it’s one of my go-to’s when visiting in October.

For this particular year, I wore black jeans, Chelsea boots, and a burgundy sweater, paired with a fall scarf and a headband.

Salem Outfit Idea 5: Orange Skirt & Jacket

Me standing in front of a white fence on a sidewalk covered in fallen autumn leaves, wearing one of my go-to Salem October outfits: my orange midi skirt, ivory and forest green striped turtleneck top, and my green and ivory checked coat that falls around the knees.

Last, I also love breaking out my orange midi skirt because it pairs so well with my ivory and forest green striped turtleneck top that I have. This coat is also a few years old from The Gap, but a green or burgundy plaid coat would look awesome with something like this.

You could easily wear sneakers with this, or throw on some comfortable ankle boots like I did.

Best Color Pairings For Fall Salem Outfits

I usually use black as my base when visiting Salem in the fall, despite it not being my standard neutral (which is navy blue). Black just fits so well with the season, and easily pairs well with autumnal colors, allowing you to lean into Halloween without overdoing it (if that’s what you’re going for).

I try to pair black with burgundy, deep orange colors like rust, or forest green. Even mixing all of these colors. together in an outfit works well for a Halloween color palette. You can easily bring in the color with accessories like your purse, a hat, or headband.

Outfit Tips For Salem In October

→ Wear comfortable shoes! This is probably my biggest tip, so if you take anything from this post, let it be this. You’ll be doing a lot of walking during your trip, and many of the streets are uneven brick or cobblestone, so this is not the time for heels – even if they look amazing 😉 I highly suggest chunky-heeled (with a LOW heel) Chelsea boots if you want somewhat of a heel, but sneakers, or whatever flat shoes you have that are comfortable will be ideal.

→ You definitely want to be aware of weather and the forecast for the days you’ll be in Salem, as dressing appropriately for the weather is really important. As mentioned, Salem is a very walkable destination, so you’ll be outside quite a bit – you’ll want to make sure you’re not too hot, or too cold.

→ Salem can be windy because of its coastal location, so if you’re planning to wear any hats (like a witch’s hat, for example), you’ll want to consider adding an elastic chin strap to keep it in place so you look great all day without worrying about it blowing off.
