A Newport, RI day trip is one of the best ways to experience the charm and history of the New England coast in a short amount of time. Often called the City by the Sea, Newport is known for its iconic Gilded Age mansions, dramatic ocean views along the Cliff Walk, beautiful beaches, and a lively downtown filled with shops, restaurants, and charming waterfront scenery. It’s a compact but incredibly rewarding destination that’s perfect for a one-day visit.
I’ve been exploring Newport for more than 15 years and have visited countless times in every season. Over the years, I’ve walked the entire Cliff Walk multiple times, toured the historic mansions, taken harbor cruises, explored the downtown and waterfront, and experienced how the city changes throughout the year. This guide brings all my first-hand experience together into a carefully planned Newport, RI day trip itinerary, designed to help you see the highlights, prioritize what’s truly worth your time, and make the most of a single day in this beautiful city.

Newport, RI Day Trip Itinerary
Morning Arrival & Parking
One thing you have to plan for before arriving in Newport for a day trip is parking. Please, take this from me who made this mistake the first TWO times I visited Newport for the day!
Parking in Newport is known for being a challenge, and during my first couple of trips, I just decided to wing it and figure it out when I got there, which was a huge mistake. In fact, during my first-ever visit, I spent most of my day looking for parking and moving my car every two hours because I didn’t research it at all.
Recommended Parking: I almost always park at the Gateway Visitor’s Center parking lot, which is only a 5 minute walk or so to the heart of downtown, Newport. If I arrive in the mornings, I have generally been able to find spots here – the only exceptions have been during busy summer events and such when you’ll need to arrive much earlier in the morning. This is a paid lot, and the best options in the city will be paid parking, so plan accordingly. The free spots along the street mostly have 1-2 hour time limits.
How Long To Park Your Car: For this itinerary, I’ve planned it to make it as easy as possible for you with your car. I’m starting off in downtown Newport, and then once you leave, you won’t have to come back to downtown, so you’ll likely park your car until early or mid afternoon, and then you can leave downtown, and park at your final destination without worrying about getting a spot.
Morning: Breakfast
Once you’re parked, I recommend starting your day trip in downtown Newport, which is where you’ll find all the harbor scenery, the majority of the shops, and most of the restaurants.
Breakfast & Coffee Recommendations:
→ Co-Dough for the famous sourdough cinnamon rolls that went viral online (hint: they’re worth the hype!). Get here early, as they tend to sell out fast every day. They don’t have coffee or drink here, so plan accordingly.
→ Drift Café for coffee and breakfast if Co-Dough isn’t your vibe, but it’s also not far from Co-Dough if you want to do both. They have a full coffee/drink menu here, and breakfast sandwiches, bowls, etc, and the food is really yummy.
Morning: Downtown Newport For Shopping & Bowen’s Wharf

After breakfast & coffee, head further into downtown. You’ll want to see Bowen’s Wharf, and visit the shops along Thames Street. Bowen’s Wharf is the main one where you’ll find some cool scenery and places to checkout, but as you keep walking along the waterfront, you’ll discover a few more wharves that are fun to walk around. Bannister’s Wharf is the other bigger one.
Thames Street is known for having the best shops in Newport, and it’s really quite long, so plan enough time to walk it if shopping is something you want to check out on your day trip.

Be sure to also walk around the historic district, which is right in the downtown area, especially along places near Spring Street – which is also where you’ll find some cool shops like Wald & Sea & The Royal Male.
Afternoon: Lunch
For lunch, I recommend staying in downtown since you’ll have tons of options to choose from, and can fuel up before leaving downtown to visit the Cliff Walk and mansions.
Recommended places for lunch in downtown Newport:
→ Diego’s: A really fun and tasty Mexican restaurant with patio seating in Bowen’s Wharf. They get busy at peak times, but they take reservations on their website here.
→ Brick Alley Pub: Located right on Thames Street, they have a wonderful and varied menu, and a good lobster roll! This place continues to a local favorite. Wait times can be long during peak season, so plan accordingly. They take a limited number of reservations each day, which you can make by clicking here.
Afternoon: Mansions & Cliff Walk

After lunch, I recommend heading back to your car and driving to Bellevue to visit one of the mansions and see the famous Cliff Walk. Both of these things are my top reasons why Newport is one of the prettiest places in all of Rhode Island. This area is walkable from downtown, and it’s a little over a mile, or about a 25-30 minute walk. If you would prefer that, go for it! Just know that you’ll need to get back downtown to pick up your car to head to the final destination before leaving Newport.

If this is your first time visiting Newport, I highly recommend seeing The Breakers, which is the most popular mansion to visit. It’s a great one to start with, and does an excellent job with self-guided tours. The mansion was built between 1893 and 1895, and if you can believe it, the sprawling, opulent building was the lavish summer “cottage” of the Vanderbilt family. It’s been impeccably preserved by the Newport Historical Society, and it such a unique place to experience the abundant wealth of the era. This is especially fun for fans of the TV show The Gilded Age, as scenes were filmed in The Breakers.
After The Breakers, I recommend heading to the Cliff Walk, which is a 3.5 mile (one-way) coastal pedestrian path that runs along the coast, and is backdropped by the city’s mansions. So, even if you skip touring the mansion on your Newport day trip, you’ll get glimpses of them while on the Cliff Walk.

From The Breakers, I recommend leaving your car at the parking lot for the mansion, and just walking a block over to Shepard Ave to access the Cliff Walk. You won’t have time to do the entire path, but depending on how much time you do have, you’ll see some of the best part of it from here. Once you enter the Cliff Walk from Shepard Ave, I recommend turning left and heading toward 40 Steps, which is a cool stop to make on the path. If you go right, you’ll walk toward the pretty gazebo in the photos pictured above.
Late Afternoon/Early Evening: Ocean Drive & Castle Hill Inn

To end your day trip in Newport, I recommend heading back to your car, and taking a drive along Ocean Avenue toward Castle Hill Inn. I’d recommend getting to Castle Hill Inn at least 1 hour before sunset to enjoy both the lighthouse, and drinks/dinner at The Lawn (if you want to eat here). I’d probably get there 1.5 hours before sunset if you want to make a reservation for The Lawn.
Ocean Drive is a short but scenic route along the coastline, and has really nice views of the water. It’s a great way to end your day trip because it’s on your way to Castle Hill Inn, where you’ll see an adorable lighthouse, and have the option for drinks and food on the lawn on the gorgeous inn.
Google Maps will automatically take you the quickest way there, which will bypass the prettiest parts of Ocean Drive. To do the full Ocean Drive on your way to Castle Hill Inn, you’ll want to put Brenton Point State Park into Google Maps first, and then you can pull over at the large parking lot there to enjoy the scenic views, and then put Castle Hill Inn as your final destination. Be sure you select the route that takes you along Ocean Drive most of the way – sometimes it may default to Brenton before getting to Ocean. The longer route will add about 10 minute to your drive, but I think it’s worth it 😊
Once you’re at Castle Hill Inn, I recommend ending your night with both the Lawn experience, and a visit to the lighthouse, depending on how much time you have. These are great spots to enjoy around sunset. The Lawn is Adirondack chair seating on, well – the lawn! And you’ll have a great view of the water to watch the sailing boats go by while sipping on drinks and enjoying some delicious food.
Pro Tip For The Lawn: It’s only open seasonally in the warmer months, and reservations can be made 30 days in advance for groups of up to 8 (groups larger than 4 can make reservations by phone only). Click here to make reservations, which I highly recommend to avoid a long wait time.
From The Lawn, you can take a short path to Castle Hill Lighthouse, which is on the grounds of the inn. It’s an adorable little lighthouse with wonderful views, and makes for a great photo opportunity.
If you don’t want to get dinner and drinks at The Lawn, you can also just visit the inn to see the lighthouse. Fair warning, there have been some times when I’ve driven to the inn to visit the lighthouse during peak summer times, and it was off-limits due to private events or being at full capacity. So this is always a possibility. However, you’re guaranteed to see it if you have a dining reservation.

To visit the lighthouse only, there’s a small parking area in the grass, and it comes right up on Google Maps. It’s called Castle Hill Lighthouse Parking, and while it doesn’t look super official, it is. You’ll then cross the street and head out on the short trail that leads to the lighthouse. There will be a sign, so it’s easy to find.
